Auckland Airport’s roading network is one of the hardest-working in the city, providing vital links for travel, trade and businesses operating in and around the airport precinct.

In the five years to the 2024 financial year, Auckland Airport has invested about $190 million to improve the 24 kilometres of road across the core airport precinct. These upgrades are helping to move people and freight into, out of, and around the airport more efficiently and reliably.

Key roading improvements include:

  • Better access from the north
George Bolt Memorial Drive has been widened to include high-occupancy vehicle lanes, plus shared paths for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • New one-way system at the international terminal
Construction of the new Terminal Exit Road and converting Tom Pearce Drive to an entry-only road, making the precinct easier for road users to navigate and ease congestion.
  • New freight bypass
Te Ara Kōrako Road provides a direct link between George Bolt Memorial Drive and Nixon Road, easing congestion near the terminals.
  • Faster connections for buses and cars
Laurence Stevens Drive now includes a dedicated T3 transit lane, improving access for Park & Ride and public transport.
  • Key intersection upgrades
Tom Pearce Drive and surrounding roads are being widened, with new lanes, pedestrian paths, and a signal-controlled intersection replacing the roundabout.
  • Park & Ride South
The new facility on SH20B reduces traffic pressure on the core airport precinct and provide faster access for over 30,000 daily users, supported by new transit lanes.

Auckland Airport continues to work with the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi and Auckland Transport to address long-term transport challenges and opportunities beyond the airport boundaries.

One of the key focuses is the capacity of Pūkaki Bridge, a critical connection to the airport. Future improvements will look to support mass transit and active transport modes such as cycling and walking, helping build a more resilient and accessible network for everyone.
